(0, 1)-Matrices with No Half-Half Submatrix of Ones

We consider the minimum number of zeroes in a 2m 2n (0; 1)-matrix M that contains no m n submatrix of ones. We show that this number, denoted by f(m; n), is at least 2n + m + 1 for m n. We determine exactly when this bound is sharp and determine the extremal matrices in these cases. For any m, the bound is sharp for n = m and for all but nitely many n > m. A general upper bound due to Gentry, f...

There Is No Degree Invariant Half-jump

We prove that there is no degree invariant solution to Post’s problem that always gives an intermediate degree. In fact, assuming definable determinacy, if W is any definable operator on degrees such that a <W (a) < a′ on a cone then W is low2 or high2 on a cone of degrees, i.e., there is a degree c such that W (a)′′ = a′′ for every a ≥ c or W (a)′′ = a′′′ for every a ≥ c. A striking phenomenon...

Half-line Schrödinger Operators with No Bound States

We consider Schödinger operators on the half-line, both discrete and continuous, and show that the absence of bound states implies the absence of embedded singular spectrum. More precisely, in the discrete case we prove that if ∆+V has no spectrum outside of the interval [−2, 2], then it has purely absolutely continuous spectrum. In the continuum case we show that if both −∆+V and −∆−V have no ...

UNIVERSITATIS APULENSIS No 20 / 2009 ON SPECIFICITY AND ENTROPY MEASURES

Our objective in this paper will be contribute to develop certain useful analytical tools on the foundations of Uncertainty Measures. Because we need to obtain new ways to model adequate conditions or restrictions, constructed from vague pieces of information. For this, it is necessary to classify more efficiently the distinct types of measures; in particular, the fuzzy measures. We made a firs...

Bias and No Free Lunch in Formal Measures of Intelligence

This paper shows that a constraint on universal Turing machines is necessary for Legg's and Hutter's formal measure of intelligence to be unbiased. Their measure, defined in terms of Turing machines, is adapted to finite state machines. A No Free Lunch result is proved for the finite version of the measure.
